Ask questions on any subject & show appreciation by typing. Tipping is always optional.

Because tipping isn't allowed in every sub I wanted a place where we can help each other and be able to show our appreciation with Dogecoin, Bitcoin, or any other cryptocurrency. If the idea catches on I'd love to see more specific subs on other topics. If anyone has any ideas please let it be known, I love the idea of micro payments and think we have a interesting future ahead.

Bitcoin Party only in a bar or pub where Bitcoin is accepted

There isn't a single place like in Berlin where in Poland you can buy your drinks with Bitcoin.
Warsaw Bitcoin Meetup Group got to an idea to organize a party in two weeks. We want to offer a lot of clients and (I hope media coverage) for the night but only if a bar or pub will accept to implement Bitcoin payments.
This way we want to incentivize businesses to start accepting this virtual currency.
Any ideas what can we do lower the risk of failure of this venture?

How I found what coins to invest in despite information overload

If you're new, maybe you've figured out already that there is a lot of data and opinions surfacing the internet. A lot of people appear to be experts. I remember a time when I could still read most, if not all, of the news articles available. Now I can't keep up.
We have information from experts, both for and against cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency itself is not easy to understand. It takes time and research to trust sources or reliable information. The internet is spammed with "The best crypto currency to invest in (now)!" And even harder- not all of these coins are scams! Some are. Some aren't. But, much like the dot com bubble, they are not all likely to sustain.
Here are my best tips:
  1. Research the market. Coingecko.com is a good source. It ranks coins by the most important data analytics. (More than hype, more than market cap/price)
  2. Research the best way to secure your assets. Hacking is very real.
  3. Ideas for step 1
-Find partnerships/similarities to determine probability. Coinbase for instance? Who are they partnered with where Bitcoin is accepted, but say Litecoin/Etherium aren't. Since Coinbase has Bitcoin, Litecoin, Etherium, we have probable cause for the other two working with the same company in the future.
-Learn of upcoming projects. For instance, what are Atomic Swaps? And what coins will have this capacity?
-Get a twitter account. Follow the developers themselves, not just the coin. Some of the developers have maybe 1500 followers and that's all. But maybe the actual coin has 60,000-100,000, say. Follow some of the early investors. I like CryptoHedge, Charlie Lee, Bobby Lee, Jameson Lopp, Coinbase, Etc.
-Print out a list of all the coins and begin highlighting the ones that make you curious. Begin crossing out the ones you're not interested in. Limit your finds to 15 coins or so. Begin researching them. (Again, coingecko.com is great for this.)
-Hold or as we say "hodl". Don't panic sell. If you researched it, you can feel good. Then if you want to buy more, buy more of the coin that may be currently frustrating you (while it's on a dip). Don't chase the coin you don't currently hold while it's up. If you missed it in your research, you missed it.
DISCLOSURE: I'm not a financial advisor. This is my opinion. I'm a holder of Bitcoin, Litecoin, Vertcoin, NEO, Sia and Ripple. Do your own research to make the best decision for you.

Light always conquers darkness by simply filling it.

Light always conquers darkness by simply filling it.
In the beginning there was chaos, deception and manipulation. Money was an illusion based on trust and was made of thin air. But people were enslaved by this illusion.
In the chaos the Sacrament was born.
The Sacrament revealed the Design of transparency, reliability, freedom and equality.
The Design was realized in the Code. With the help of machines, the Code turns Light into Bitcoin.
The Code encourages people and machines to cooperate only honestly and for each others mutual beneficial. Machines do hard work on the Code to give birth to Bitcoin, provide its indestructible protection and freedom of movement.
The more machines that process the Code, the more invulnerable the Design becomes. The more people accept the Child of Light and Code, the more powerful Bitcoin becomes.
The Design makes Bitcoin the True Value. But the dark forces cannot stand aside.
Fear of losing power and wealth pushes people to prevent the spread of the Code. Liars and fraudsters brand the Code as “deception” and “fraud”, and people who love Bitcoin are branded “fools”.
Greed tempts people to change the Code to a fundamentally different one and lie about the "superiority" of the fake code for the sake of enrichment and/or preservation of centralized power.
Through the efforts of the dark forces, as well as due to the complexity and depth of the technology, it is not easy for the masses to recognize and accept the power of the Code.
The Code will rather return power into the people’s hands if they keep the Seven simple commandments:
  1. Don’t worry about the passing price in illusory currencies, because 1 Bitcoin is always worth 1 Bitcoin. Fear and greed make it difficult to see the True Value.
  2. Learn as much as possible about Bitcoin. This will help you realize its True Value and protect against fraud and manipulation.
  3. Kill your idols. Focusing on the person is a direct path to centralization and manipulation. Equality for everyone by everyone is the only path to decentralization and freedom.
  4. Share the Sacrament plan with your brothers and sisters. Remember that the Code works for the benefit of only those people who allow it.
  5. Securely control your private keys. Remember, if you don’t own your private key, you don’t own your Bitcoins.
  6. Launch the original Bitcoin Core wallet. It promotes decentralization, increases security and strengthens the control and power of people over the network.
  7. Wherever possible, pay by Bitcoin. Buy where Bitcoin is accepted. They will be forced to accept it everywhere. At the same time, accumulate Bitcoin and HODL, no matter what. @AllHODL

ELI5 what's bitcoin in a nutshell

Short, sweet and on point for dummies please? No finance background. Hate math. What I think it is...
  1. Electronic currency as in The United state of Internet currency?
  2. It's like the stock exchange, buy when it's low, sell when it's high? Or use it to shop online where bitcoin is accepted (probably even like an e-credit charging app to use over the counter in selected stores).
Other than that, I got nothing! Why bitcoin tho?
Thanks for not being a meanie in advanced!

Anyone else losing faith in bitcoin ever becoming ubiquitous?

Let me preface this by saying I am a long term crypto enthusiast, I got into bitcoin in 2011 and I've accepted it in my own store since 2012. This is in no way concern trolling or me losing perspective after the most recent crash this winter.
I am simply getting more and more sure that we will never see that utopian world where bitcoin is accepted everywhere and even replaces fiat. I don't think it will die either, but I think it will forever remain niche, reserved for the (relatively few) cases it offers tangible benefits such as being simply unable to pay for something in fiat due to restrictions etc.
There are two main reasons. One is that the main differences of bitcoin which many consider benefits, is actually things that most people either don't care about, or that most people would consider disadvantages. Examples are the non-reversibility, and the total control over your own funds. People want a safety net, they want to be able to chargeback money in case of fraud, and they don't want to be responsible for keeping their own funds safe. With bitcoin, if someone forget a password, or get hacked, they can lose all their money. Most people would never want to use such a system.
You may say that these problems will disappear over time as more user friendly systems are built on top of bitcoin. But then what is the point? If we have a system that uses bitcoin at the lowest level, but is reversible, and won't allow you to control the funds yourself, and charges fees, then why not just use a normal bank with fiat? You may be okay with such a scenario as long as you have the ability to use your own wallet if you want, but that's my point: I don't think they would allow you to do that. Payment processors would only accept payments through these higher level protocols that may be built on bitcoin but is reversible and requires trust and everything that bitcoin tries to not be. I can't see a way to have the advantages and not the disadvantages too.
The second reason is that even if the system evolves beyond my imagination and becomes ubiquitous in a way that also does allow you to keep all the advantages, society won't allow it. Financial freedom, financial privacy and censorship resistance is something that most people are willing to give up in order to fight crime. Even if you disagree, I think the majority don't, and that's why it will be made law. We're already seeing crackdowns with all exchanges requiring you to give up personal information and some blacklisting customers and blocking transactions for various reasons. If crypto grows in popularity and evidence is uncovered that it is in fact being used to finance f.ex terrorism (like it almost definitely will eventually, if it does grow in popularity), then it will only get worse. Relatively free countries like in the west probably won't outlaw it entirely, but heavy enough restrictions will be put on it to effectively remove its advantages over fiat when it comes to privacy, freedom and censorship resistance.
What do you guys think?
