New Season – Keener’s Legacy

A new season is almost upon us! Starting on June 23rd, Keener’s Legacy offers 12 weeks of in-game activities and unique rewards. Season 2 brings a new Seasonal Manhunt, new Leagues, a new Global event and new unique rewards, as well as an Apparel Event.
 

New Raid - Operation Iron Horse

The True Sons have taken over a Foundry to develop new weapons and threaten to destroy everything the Division has worked for.
  • New bosses, puzzles and rewards!
  • Level 40 version available on June 30th, followed the next week by the level 30 version.
  • Discovery mode will become available at a later date.

Balance and Bug Fixes

Title Update 10 is bringing our first large balance pass following the release of Warlords of New York. Beyond the addition of new content, the update focuses on three main aspects mainly game health through bug fixes and balancing, generosity by increasing your chances to receive a high-quality item as loot and increasing overall player power. Missing Localized Audio

We wanted to inform you about an issue with localized audio that will be present when we launch Title Update 10 and Season 2. While the team was able to work from home to get this update ready, with your help testing the content on the PTS, we unfortunately were not able to record all localized audio content for TU10. With everything going on in the world, our top priority is the well-being of our teams, including our voice actors. Of course, we will start working on recording the missing audio with our partners when it is safe to do so and, in some cases, we were able to get things started already. Adding the localized files to the game as soon as we can in one of our next updates is an absolute priority for the team. This only affects Seasonal content. Operation Iron Horse audio is fully localized.
If you are currently playing with a non-English client, you don’t have to change anything going into Title Update 10. When localized audio is missing you will just hear the English audio instead. Subtitles have been localized and can be activated in the ingame options.

New Exotics

SRS Sniper Rifle: Mantis

  • Your scoped view displays additional information about enemies not targeting you
  • Your scoped view highlights enemy weakpoints
  • Headshot and weak point damage against enemies not targeting you amplified by 50%
  • Headshot kills reset the cooldown of the Decoy skill. This bonus will wait until the Decoy goes on cooldown if currently active
 

Mask: Vile

  • Status effects also apply a damage over time debuff for 10s
  • Total damage dealt is equal to 50% of your concussion grenade damage and increased by your status effect attributes
 

Double Barrel Rifle: The Ravenous (Operation Iron Horse)

  • On trigger-pull, fire both barrels at once
  • When fired from the right shoulder, hits add offensive primers, and defensive primers when fired from the left shoulder
  • Hits from one shoulder will detonate all of the opposite shoulder's primers when present
  • When detonated or affected enemy is killed, each offensive primer deals 100% weapon damage, while each defensive primer grants +4% bonus armor and +10% amplified damage to armor plates for 5s
  • Primer effectiveness is doubled at 10 stacks
 

Magnum Pistol: Regulus (Operation Iron Horse)

  • Headshot kills create a 5m explosion, dealing 400% weapon damage and applying bleed to all enemies hit.

    • Chainkiller (Walker, Harris & Co. chest) with Perfect Headhunter. After killing an enemy with a headshot, your next weapon hit within 30s deals 150% of that killing blow’s damage in addition to it.
    • Damage is capped to 800% of your weapon damage. This is raised to 1250% if your headshot damage is greater than 150%.
 

New Skill Variant

  • Repair Trap
    • The Repair Trap deploys a line of small devices capable of repairing friendlies in their proximity.
    • Note: The Repair Trap will not be available in-game until the Seasonal prime target unlocks in August.

Crafting

  • Crafting will now guarantee a higher minimum item power, resulting in higher overall stat rolls. An increased maximum item power also allows for better crafted items than before. The added weighting between the minimum and maximum power results in a more balanced average outcome for crafted and reconfigured items
  • Removed final World Tier 5 crafting bench upgrade, as its power increase is now redundant
 

Vendors

  • Added Named Items to both Open World and Dark Zone vendors
  • Increased prices for Named Items
  • Increased item power for all vendors
  • Vendors no longer sell Superior quality items at maximum level
 

SHD Levels

  • Added Field Proficiency cache to SHD level-up after reaching the maximum season level
  • Increased crafting material rewards for spending SHD level points in the Scavenging category
 

Conflict

  • Added Season/SHD experience gain on Conflict level-up
 

Rogue Agent Encounters

  • Every Rogue Agent killed will now drop loot
  • Rogue Agent encounters no longer occur during time trials
 

Control Point Officers

  • Players revived by a Control Point Officer will now have 80% of their armor restored (Previously 0%)
  • Reduced the likelihood of Control Point Officers being downed in combat
 

Bounties

  • Bounties acquired by speaking to characters in the open world will always be set to the difficulty at time of acquisition or higher.
  • This affects the Snitch and civilians rescued during the Public Execution or Rescue Living World Activities.
  • Scheduled bounties, such as daily and clan bounties, are unaffected.
Developer comment: Bounties acquired in the open world should always provide challenge and loot appropriate to the world they were acquired in. Upping your global difficulty now has the added benefit of improving all bounties you acquire within it.
 

Projects

  • New Season Pass Holder Project Slot.
    • Season Pass holders now have access to an exclusive daily mission which provides a large bonus to XP.
  • Weekly SHD Requisition Project Slot
    • Endgame players at World Tier 5 and Level 40 now have a weekly supplies donation project which rewards them with an exotic cache. (For World Tier 5 players, this replaces the previous daily SHD Requisition project.)
  • Legendary Mission Project
    • After TU10, completing any legendary mission will grant you the Weekly Legendary Mission project slot.
    • Completing the designated legendary mission will reward you with an exotic cache.
Developer comment: With the addition of "re-rolls" to exotics available through crafting, we created the new Weekly projects to provide a reliable supply of exotic components or exotic items.
 

RPG Balance

 

Incoming Repairs

  • Incoming Repairs no longer increases the amount of armor repaired by armor kits, talents or gear set effects.
Developer comment: Incoming Repairs was always meant to be the defensive attribute equivalent to Repair Skills, so that players could further enhance the amount of healing they receive from their skills, or the group's healer. Unfortunately, the underlying code prevented us from differentiating between alternate sources of armor repair, such as those from talents and gear sets like Foundry Bulwark, or Firewall's unique armor kit effect. We wanted to address this during the development of Warlords of New York, but chose to post-pone the fix in order to deal with higher priority issues at the time. We underestimated the extent to which this attribute would affect the new Warlords meta, and failed to predict the severity of degenerate gameplay it would cause when combined with certain talents or gear sets. It's important to stress that this is not a PvP-only issue, or an instance of the PvP environment affecting PvE balance. Incoming Repairs was compromising both aspects of the game, and needed to be addressed, especially considering this update coincides with the release of a new raid. Not addressing the issue would mean forcing ourselves to balance all existing and future gear and talents around the knowledge that players could potentially (read: very likely) double the amount of repairs they receive, which stifles creativity and effectively limits player choice.
 

Weapon Handling

  • 1% Weapon Handling now gives 1% Weapon Accuracy, Stability, Reload Speed, and Swap Speed, up from 0.25%.
  • Reduced the maximum amount of Weapon Handling rolled on gear by 6%, to a maximum of 8% at level 40.
Developer comment: In the current meta, Weapon Handling on gear is considered a dead stat with no significant benefit. In TU10, equipping a piece of gear with +8% Weapon Handling will now give you:
  • +8% Accuracy
  • +8% Stability
  • +8% Swap Speed
  • +8% Reload Speed
This should hopefully make Weapon Handling a strong complimentary attribute for players looking to increase their overall accuracy/stability (bloom + recoil) and/or reload/swap speed. Making the % amount of Weapon Accuracy/Stability/Swap Speed/Reload Speed gained from Weapon Handling 1:1 will also remove another element of arcane knowledge from the game and reduce the need for additional mental math when determining whether the bonus is an upgrade or not.
 

Talent Changes:

  • Leadership: Bonus Armor increased to 15% from 12%
  • Spike: Skill Damage Duration increased to 15s from 8s
  • Reformation: Skill Repair Duration increased to 15s from 8s
  • Creeping Death: No Longer goes on cooldown if there are no valid nearby enemies to apply a status effect to. Status effects applied now properly copy the source status effect’s damage and duration.
 

PvP

  • Global Damage Modifiers
    • Reduced all PvP weapon damage by -20%
  • Additional Damage Modifiers
    • Increased MMR PvP weapon damage by 12.5%
    • Reduced Assault Rifle PvP weapon damage by -15%
    • Reduced Shotgun PvP damage by -12.5%
    • Reduced SMG PvP damage by -10%
    • Reduced Pistol PvP damage by -10%
    • Reduced Rifle PvP damage by -5%
 
_Developer comment: With TU10, there have been significant buffs made to the base damage of assault rifles, SMGs, and shotguns in particular. In order to prevent those weapons from becoming overly powerful in PvP, we’ve had to lower their PvP damage modifiers to compensate.
Note: Assault rifles are still tuned to be 10% stronger than normal in PvP in order to compensate for their innate Damage to Health bonus being less useful against other players when compared to other weapon archetypes._
 
  • Specific Damage Modifiers
    • Increased Double Barrel Shotgun PvP damage by 16.6%
    • Reduced Pestilence PvP damage by -10%

  • Exotic Modifiers
    • Merciless/Ruthless: “Binary Trigger” amplified weapon damage and explosion damage reduced by -50% in PvP
    • Dodge City Gunslinger’s Holster: “Quick Draw” damage bonus gained per stack in PvP lowered from +2% to +1%
      • Stacks gained per second in PvP now match the PvE value (0.5s to 0.3s)
    • Imperial Dynasty:
      • No longer automatically applies burn status effect to the nearest enemy in range.
      • Now requires maintaining range and LOS (line-of-sight) for 3 seconds between the holster bearer and nearest enemy before applying the burn status effect.
      • Added visual UI feedback to reveal the radius of effect in PvP and an indicator for LOS between the holster bearer and nearest enemy.
Developer comment: This should help address the lack of contextual feedback in PvP, and add a much needed window of opportunity for counterplay, or potential to avoid the incoming effect entirely.
 
  • * Pestilence * Plague of the Outcast damage-over-time effect no longer triggers True Patriot’s white debuff armor repair effect. (PvP and PvE)
Developer comment: While we like to embrace emergent or unintended mechanics when the end result is unique and fun gameplay, True Patriot’s white debuff explicitly states it requires shooting the debuffed target in order to receive the armor repair effect. Pestilence’s DoT managed to bypass this restriction, making it and True Patriot (especially when combined with Incoming Repairs) scale to disproportionate levels of power when used together.

    • Negotiator’s Dilemma
      • Reduced the range at which marked targets can damage each other when critically hit to 15m (PvP only).
      • Added visual UI feedback when in range of another marked target.
  • Talent Modifiers
    • Efficient: Reduced specialization armor kit bonus from 100% to 50%
    • Versatile: Reduced the amplified weapon damage bonus for SMGs and shotguns from 35% to 25%
    • Vanguard: Reduced the duration of shield invulnerability from 5s to 2s
      • Note: UI will still show the old duration, but will be fixed in a later update.

Developer commentary: We want dedicated skill builds to have multiple, powerful defensive tools for area denial/control. However, the strength of bleed effects meant being hit by just 1 stinger drone, mortar, or seeker mine was nearly a death sentence for most builds. The stinger hive should now better punish players who remain within its area of effect, rather than needing to rely entirely on the excessive damage of a single bleed DoT, while allowing the hive’s drone damage to scale higher for dedicated skill builds.

Developer comment: The Cluster Seeker Mine is not intended to be as accurate as the Explosive variant. Once it is a certain distance from its target it locks the location it is aiming for and continues towards that regardless of where its original target agent has since moved to. This "bullcharge" behavior reflects the mini-mines' less advanced technology and balances the skill mod's effectiveness. This said, we have noticed that the Cluster Seeker's accuracy has been a source of frustration so we've shortened the distance until it activates its "bullcharge" and adjusted when it decides to explode. These adjustments should make the Cluster Seeker feel more accurate, but these are measured steps as we do not want the skill to return to its OP TU7-state.

You have stated that I was faking disabilities that I had not even heard of before I was even diagnosed with, you have made fun of a small child for being scared of a hallucination. Part 7. Traumatic situations.
Moving on to ten when my favourite uncle held us hostage. Did you know I saw that knife held to your neck while looking over the banister? I did. I saw my favourite uncle hold a knife to your neck and new me and my sister needed to get out which is why when you came up, I was trying to get my sister to leave. That is why I said the tree. You made the whole thing about you, it was all you. Me and my sister, we weren't traumatized, i didn't just lose the one person i felt like i had a connection to. No, the only person who mattered was you. To the point that when i broke down i was told i had to “stop crying” because YOU need me, a ten year old child, to be strong enough to handle YOUR truma. Thats not how that works.
Part 8. How to handle your child be sexually assaulted
How about 12? How about when the ongoing sexual harassment and inappropriate comments [grooming let us be honest} by my MOTHERS partner at the time was doing {that both me and my siblings had warned her about it and that we were uncomfortable. I am not protecting you anymore, you knew how we felt.} ended with him sexually assaulting me and another girl. {for her privacy I will not name her, but she knows who she is. If she wants to confront you that is on her.} while he was babysitting and why was he babysitting? Because you wanted to go out partying and do not say “oh well you said it was fine” I was 12 what else would I say?
Also after that you proceed to tell me about your sexual assault and that you had it so much worse. You said this while drunk and did not remember. You were in your 20s when you were assaulted, I WAS A CHILD! I was even a child the first time I was raped. You are not special, you want help see a doctor stop putting it on me and my siblings- also get some help your not ok, you have never been ok, the fact you put this on a CHILD proves your not ok. You have told me so much shit when drunk to discredited my assaults i don't even know if what you said was true anymore but ill give you the benefit and say it is. In witch case you are not coping you are an abusive alcoholic who doesn't even see the damage they're doing around them. Get help.
I have a massive problem with understanding what is and isn't appropriate to say now, i don't understand social situations. That was your fault. Your the one who didnt teach me what is and isnt appropriate in sexual situations. Part 9 how to deal with bullying
Under all of this is the ongoing systematic bullying that went from kindy till year 10, why did it go on for so long? From being PIP'd at a startup to leveling up into a FANG in four months.

When my manager sat me down in our 1:1 to deliver me the news that I was about to be put on a PIP the next week and to use the weekend to think what my next step should be, my initial reaction was to want to take it and save my job. I knew I've been in a bit of a slump, sleeping very poorly, and not outputting as much as I could have. But to be quite honest, this was a blessing in disguise.
The company I've been working at wasn't doing that well to begin with. We raised a series D in just under two years of existence and my options have quintupled in value since joining, but we've had regulational troubles and the hardware team has been slipping. Our CTO was fired four months after I joined, and our new CTO promised to double our engineering headcount by the end of last year. We've maybe only added 5 people to a team of 30 instead by that point. To that end, I've had multiple manager changes within that time period: a total of five managers and six manager changes all within 12 months. As this was my first job out of college, I thought this was all normal for a startup.
In addition, the pay was very low. For a new grad that didn't know better, like yours truly, that number was a lot for someone who was only ever paid hourly. But after discussing with friends that went onto working at FANGs and other, more established unicorn startups, it was abundantly clear that me and my fellow colleagues were severely underpaid. Like, over 50% lower in base salary alone underpaid for the same line of work and more stress.
The work itself wasn't that great either. It was a system that had to be supported globally with different rules in different countries and with physical hardware that we had little control over. Nobody left the office before dinner was served, and seldom did people start going home after dinner was finished (well, up until recently since people stopped giving fucks). We had almost no senior engineers either, most of the work was done by fresh grads or interns from top CS schools. We maybe had only four veteran IC's, but the rest of the "senior" staff were in management. Everyone else was a new grad or junior engineer. You wouldn't find anyone that had more than two years of experience in the rest of the crowd. It's fun to be around people my age, but the work was sloppy and stressful when shit broke because you're trying to build something with little guidance and your code reviewers are other new grads that are equally as experienced as yourself. Nobody (besides maybe three people) has ever coded in the framework we used, and everyone learned the language and framework right on the job. Our only training was a link to an official guide.
I'm not going to get into the company politics, but it's sufficient to say our Blind was so spicy to the point screenshots of several call-out threads were brought up in meetings and mentioned in all-hands. It was pretty bad.
But going back to me getting served a PIP. My manager gave me an ultimatum: either take the PIP, or take severance and interview for another company. Over that weekend, I thought really hard about all the things I've seen and done in the past year, and quite frankly, I found that I haven't been happy at that place for a while now. It doesn't make sense to try to save a job I wasn't going to be happy at, where I get paid peanuts, and where my contributions are invisible to upper management because the longest I've had the same manager for was two and a half months. I decided to take the severance and leave.
This gave me time to relax, exercise, enjoy hobbies I haven't done in months, and most importantly, spend time with family and friends I haven't been around with because of this job. Oh, I forgot to mention that the company moved headquarters halfway through my tenure and bumped my commute from 20 minutes to over an hour.
I haven't touched leetcode or interview prep materials in ages since joining, so I really only hit the books about two weeks after leaving. My daily routine would be to exercise in the day, eat a protein heavy meal, and study up leetcode into the night at a 24/7 cafe. I would usually do this with a buddy or two who are freelance developers. I also kept a spreadsheet of jobs I was interested in and updated their statuses in where I was at in the process, who the point of contact was, when the interview dates are, etc. I wanted to end up at a FANG company since their offices were much closer to where I lived and the culture there would help me grow more as an engineer. My process was that I started off with companies I didn't quite care about to practice interviewing, and then build up to places I did want to end up working at.
I slowly but steadily practiced coding problems, took my time to understand what the solutions were, and apply those skills onto other problems that came up. In reality, most programming problems you encounter are really just other problems in disguise, and you just need to know the fundamentals of CS to get through them. I'm sure everyone wants to know what my stats are, so here they are: 64 easy, 50 medium, 15 hard.
After a few months of practice and interviewing at companies I wasn't particularly interested in, I started applying for places that actually interested me. In the end, I got two offers and was able to negotiate with a FANG company that has an office 10 minutes away from my house. I not only nearly tripled my TC, but I also got leveled up to an L4. After being stuck in L3 for almost two years with shit pay, I am glad my patience and steady progress paid off.
My lessons learned in this whole experience:
As for my tips for the interview prep:
Most of my system design solutions came from experiences I've had and a lot were creative, open-ended questions. My advice is to be likeable to the interviewer and not BS your thought process. For some reason, system design is something that comes the most natural to me, so I sadly can't give much tips for studying on it besides seeing for yourself how current systems are built.
And in general, you should be likeable to the interviewer. Smile, ask them what they work on, what cool projects they've done at the company, what their work life balance is like, etc. You're interviewing for the company and you're interviewing the company for yourself. Your interviewer is judging on whether you'd be a good person to be around with for 8 hours and help contribute to solving their problems, and you're judging whether the company you're interviewing for will make you enjoy yourself being there.
Everyone's experience is unique and certainly not as relaxed as mine. I thankfully had enough savings to last me almost a whole year without a job, but I realize others might not be fortunate enough to have that luxury. It'll be hard, but worth it to study up in the evenings and then take days off to go to onsites. In the end, what matters most is your sanity and happiness.
Tl;dr: job sucked, I got PIP'd, quit, took time off, studied, interviewed, and accepted a FANG offer that tripled my pay in four months.

Airpods: The least mediocre bluetooth headset

Here goes my unwarranted, unneeded, and overblown review of the Apple Airpods
It has been a long couple of weeks my friends. I had previously been using the Phiaton BT100NC bluetooth headset for my daily use and had few complaints. Audio quality was surprisingly good compared to things like the LG tones and Powerbeats, connectivity was relatively poor compared to those other models. Overall it was hard to complain but as of late they seem to have a tougher time maintaining a solid connection and rather ungracefully chop up your audio as it regains connectivity. Most importantly I got these for $50 (employee purchase at a retail store a few years ago).
I debated for a long time but after the 100th time I yanked my cell phone off my desk this month, I decided it is time to explore bluetooth headphones again. Unfortunately nearly every company does that Bose wingtip style earplug. What is good about these is that they hold your earbuds in supremely well, what is awful is that it destroys the audio quality (at least for my ears). I like the idea that I will not have great isolation because I work in a quiet office and need to be able to hear people walking up to my desk behind me. What I do not appreciate is the nonexistent bass, hollow sounding upper mids and screechy highs which seems to be very common for all these IEMs/bluetooth headsets which use this design. I imagine that this must just be a problem for myself because I don't hear all that much complaining about sound quality. I've been through at least 15 different pairs and exhausted their various size options to no avail, the sound is just crap unless I depress the earbuds farther into my ear which of course slip right back with the wing tip design. /rant
Quick side note:
I gave the Jabra Elite Sports a chance, dear god these are an abomination. 0 bass, 0 mids, unpleasant highs. Connectivity is janky and unintuitive, battery life is unbelievably bad, and dear god the audio is disgusting. These were enticing because one of the size options is to remove the wingtips, unfortunately the actual design of the earbuds make them have the same problem I described above anyways. If you press them into your ears (ouch! this design sucks!) they sound borderline reasonable but extremely muddy.

APPLE

Okay guys, I did it. I broke down and said fuck it, I'm going Apple. Quick backstory; I hated Apple for a variety of reasons you could google and learn quickly. At my first Tech support job I started liking MacOS and have shifted different aspects of my life in a decidedly more Apple-y direction. Headphones are where I drew the line, I said no, not ever. Yes the new Earpod design is more comfortable than that god awful plastic garbage they used to peddle. Yes I've read the Airpods are god's gift to the earth. We've all been there and done that, fanboys gonna fanboy, and I will maintain my protest by not giving in.
They are fucking great
I bought these explicitly because I knew they would be inoffensive to my ear in terms of fit and the battery life was much better than most rivals. I had heard connectivity was very good but I wasn't really buying this bullshit with their W1 chip like the rest of their proprietary (imaginary) improvements. Lets jump in, in order of how you experience it:
Fit, finish, and finesse
Blah blah open the box etc, quick note, fuck the lightning connector. Okay so I'm pulling my little dental floss container out of the packaging am greeted with relatively precharged Airpods, this was nice as I obviously wanted to try them out and the other brands I tried came with <15 minutes of battery if that. I am an Android user and don't care for iOS much but I read that these work well on Android but you have to "suffer through Android's interface to finally manage to search for bluetooth connections". I won't link where I read that, but it was rather disgusting considering my experience was this:
Done. To be totally fair, if I had an iOS device, just being near the Airpods after opening the container would prompt a pop-up on my device asking if I was wanting to pair them. While that is certainly better, it isn't a much different process and is totally more convenient than every other device I had tried up to this point. To give Bose some credit, the Soundsport Free's have a similarly easy connection process but initial setup through their app is never a welcome sight.
Popping them in your ear is natural and easy with little to no fidgeting to get a good fit. They sit in your ears comfortably and I never feel like they are about to slip out. On Android they do not deactivate when removed (which I like) or activate google assistant when double tapped. Double tapping is easy and less offensive than hard button presses from the other devices which are just inconvenient. On Android the default setting is to have double tap pause your content just like any other headset (this is also an option for iOS but not default). Another small downside is that on Android you cannot check battery life, although there are apps that let you check battery if they are in the charging pod. This is fine for me since my primary computer at work is a Mac which does display the battery. Switching connections is also very fluid (much like the other nicer alternatives), all you need to do is initiate pairing from a device that you have previously connected and the airpods drop their current connection and swap to the device you selected. Earlier in this paragraph would have been a good place to start a new subsection but it flowed so naturally from fitting/initial experience that I couldn't find a good divide. One last thing to mention is that the battery life really is much better than the alternatives I have tried and the connectivity is extremely slick. If one ear loses connection, it doesn't talk to you, fuck up the audio, or take long to reconnect. It just does it right, I hate to admit it but a lot of things with Apple 'just do' despite that being the most overused and overblown thing ever.
Sound
This is why we are all here right? Let me shorten this for you, they are below mediocre. If I pick up my Xiaomi Piston Hybrids (cheap), then I will have a much more magical experience overall despite them being $100+ cheaper. But that isn't fair right? I mean I can't compare AC wifi to ethernet and call myself fair. So in the name of fairness and parity, we will be only looking at these in the scope of competitors. Sound-wise, I've heard better from the likes of the Sennheiser HD1 Free and my Phiatons but that's about it. Considering these aren't really even technically competitors and of course have isolation advantage, the Airpods are in good company. | DISCLAIMER: as mentioned above, this could be due to my ear shape | The actual competitors such as the Bose Soundsport Free sound significantly worse to me, all of the wingtip designed iems/headsets have sounded miserable to me unless I press and hold them farther into my ear. I personally have a hard time believing that I'm the only person experiencing this especially because every other IEM has sounded fine to me without needing me to press them in consistently.
Highs sound fine, something like 2200hz (guestimation) sounds a little harsh to me and something even higher sounds more harsh but it isn't linear. I can't really explain it as I'm not sure anyone would bother to measure Apple anything but I would guess 2200hz and like ~6500hz would look spiked. I tried to play some test tones and place it where I thought it sounded about right. When listening to EDM for example it sounds really smooth and nice except for specific claps and clicks which can border on irritating at times with higher volumes. Otherwise it is definitely acceptable and as an owner of AT MSR7s I'm no stranger to emphasized highs. I think the Airpods do a fine job of recreating it and actually sounding pretty clear for the most part.
In general, they actually sound pretty responsive and aren't very muddy compared to a LOT of wireless headsets. Especially the totally wire free style earbuds tend to really lack in this department but I find it really adequate and the lower mids actually sound very pleasant even when comparing to regular headphones. Not a lot to say here for me
I have a bone to pick with the Head-fi buyer's guide where the reviewer (@joe?) stated that the bass was severely lacking and bassheads need not apply. I tend to listen on higher volumes, but the bass definitely feels more than adequate to me. I'm actually blown away by how good the bass is in most cases, even down to like 26-30hz sounds nice and rumbly which is pretty great compared to a lot of even regular headphones I've listened to. Now, this isn't rumble my brain levels of bass like the V-Moda lp2 but its more than adequate for the task of being ultra portable. I'm genuinely confused about where this person was coming from. I will say that when listening to Metal in particular, bass pedals tend to not come through all that well, I didn't feel like trying to pinpoint what frequency this was at because bass pedals tend to have the rumble from the actual bass and the clapping impact of the pedals so I can't discern it too well personally. I don't feel comfortable guessing as I think it is pretty far off.
Based on my descriptions you might think I'd call these V shaped, but they really aren't. A song like "A Nightmare to Remember" by Dream Theater does a great job of accentuating how kinda wonky and unstable the sound seems. Certain frequencies are really overpowering while others get really lost. I would say fairly deep bass is good while upper bass is poor, mids are rather solid. upper mids/lower highs are good while upper highs are in the backseat for sure. I love the cymbal work of a good drummer, and it just doesn't shine with these earbuds.
In that same review I've referenced above the author also stated the soundstage is very forward and unimpressive. I actually disagree here as well, I really think the soundstage is decent. It isn't amazing but again, considering the competition, it is a welcome change in sound. Yes they are pretty forward but I don't like the idea of comparing them to non-competing products. I would say that I am surprised at how good the soundstage is considering the lack of isolation. Separation is on par, not great not bad. Not a lot to say here as well.
I'll be very short, they aren't IEMs so you can't expect a lot. I will say at my listening level I don't hear much but for most people I suspect it could get annoying how much ambient audio gets through. I like it for the office so I can hear people coming up to me.

Scoring

Value: 10/10
I would pay an infinite amount of money for something that just does its job at this point and these are the only fully wireless earbuds I would actually bother recommending. Compared to its competition, it is more than worth it whether you like Apple or Not.
Style: 5/10
Let's be honest, if you think any fully wireless earphones look good, fuck yourself. These are relatively inoffensive and at least they are small but it does look rather 5th elementy. Again, compared to competition they aren't bad. 5/10 exactly average
Sound: 9/10
They'd be 10/10 but its just a little off, compared to its peers, they are wonderful.
Comfort/fit: 8/10
I'd always prefer actual IEMs but these are fine, for most normally endowed humans they should work alright. I'm told there are some accessories that help here too. If I had to compare these to the Jabra Elites, it is much like heaven and hell.
Usability: 10/10
Superb in all aspects, could not ask for anything except perhaps volume control. With this category though, the current implementations are very poor so I suppose I'd take no buttons over hard to press ones that hurt my ears. Connectivity is superb and I really have to touch again on the fact that if one ear loses connectivity, it is very quick to be regained and doesn't annoy you with prompts.
Ultimately all that matters, would you recommend these to someone and are you getting your money's worth?
If you value sound above all else, no. Do not purchase these and stick with Chifi options that will sound much better at a fraction of the price. However if you are looking for a combination of sound and convenience, then this is easily as good as I've had. I had a problem with the price-point until I experienced the alternatives for fully wire free headsets. Well Checkmate me, and fuck you Apple. I begrudgingly accept another Apple product into my life because its just fucking better.
Clarification and background - if you wonder why I hate Apple so much it is because they have a bad problem with mismarketing a lot of products that people don't really or shouldn't really want. MacOS overall is less annoying to deal with these days than Windows, that said I still use Windows 10 at home because of the reality of gaming and hardware. There is no Mac outside of the iMac and Mac mini lines that are good value anymore. iPad Pro is the most hilariously awful product I could envision. What they've done with the hardware on new Macbook Pro's is disgusting and it is truly insulting that they will sell a several-year-old spec for brand new prices for years. I think iPhones had a bad interface for years but the current iteration of iOS is pretty acceptable and I may actually switch at some point but so help me god if they fully remove buttons on all future iPhones I will never do that. Watch this great video if you are wondering what I mean by Apple loves to hate you. I did not make this video but as someone who has worked in a repair shop and currently is a Mac Admin I 100% understand and it is infuriating. Where Apple really shines though, is having good enough software that is open enough without fucking your shit over at every turn. I love that MacOS is relatively cheap, I love that I don't have to buy a special multi hundred dollar server version of their OS (Cough cough Microsoft). I love that apps are mostly self contained and very simple. Time Machine brings tears to my eyes as a long time PC user. Windows has only just recently slightly caught up to some quality of life features that Apple has had for years.

EDIT2: Cool trick I forgot about, you can pull one airpod out and the other will not actually activate as long as the carrying pod has battery power.

[How To]Full Node (Beta) + GUI + Staking on Raspberry PI 3

Hello everyone,
With the Full Node Beta recently being released on 3/28 and the Full Node GUI on 4/11, I thought it would be an excellent time to update the RPi tutorial by olcko and demon for the RPi. I've been running it now for about 1 week and it has been working great so far, but I haven't been connected to many peers running the full node. Hopefully this tutorial will help change that!
This tutorial will take over from the previous tutorial's step 4. Steps 1-3 cover installing Raspbian and SSH on the RPi and are excellent.
PREREQUISITES
FULL NODE Setup

The "apiuri" option enables access to the API from another device on your network (Thanks Daan Damhuis!).
That's it! Your node should be running now, but may take a while to sync. You can test the node's API by pointing your browser to http://:37221/swagge
If you don't plan on using RPC, make sure you follow the instructions from the previous tutorial step 3 to block RPC connections.

Full Node GUI Setup
Now that the Core Daemon is running, we can install the GUI frontend. We will be following the instructions from here. The GUI that interacts with the node can be installed on the RPi or another device on your network (with some tweaks to the underlying code, below).

Remote GUI Tweaks
I'm adding this section for RPi owners who don't run a GUI on their RPi device, but may want to run the GUI on another device on their network. This can be done because the GUI interacts with the full node through the API; however it will take some tweaks to the code before compiling to make this set-up work. The instructions for "Full Node GUI Setup" above should be run on that device.
There is one place in the code where you need to replace "localhost" with your RPi's local private network IP address.

Helpful RPi tips for remote management
  • Use Screen + SSH! Screen is a wonderful utility that will leave your session running when you disconnect from ssh. This is available via sudo apt-get install screen on your RPi. You can reconnect when you return at another ssh session with:
screen -x
  • Sometimes the full node on your RPi will hang or unexpectedly crash - stopping staking in the process. Borrowing from here, I have created a script that will monitor for hangs or crashes and restart the node.
  • If the node is restarted, you will still need to re-enable staking. This can be accomplished through the GUI, a browser using swagger, or with an API call through a local script (insecure).
Sample helper scripts, including a .screenrc configuration, for the above can be found in a pastebin here.
Example API calls can be found on the full node's swagger API interface.
  • Note: your wallet passphrase must be sent via POST to re-enable staking.

Introduction

As always, the past 3 months since 22nd June have been crazy busy. The bears might still be around, but the show must go on and of course has not slowed the Groestlcoin development team in the slightest. Back in 2014, the world was taken by storm when Facebook approved the first cryptocurrencies tipping apps. The first was for Dogecoin, and the second was for multiple coins.
The project was hosted on whitepuma.net, and persisted for almost two years, built up a massive user community and gave a home to Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin and dozens of other bitcoin-based altcoins.
After very active months, the tipping hype started to fade away. Then, the developers decided to jump into the next stage: bringing not only tipping, but also mining and a widget that could be embedded on websites to allow everyone to accept payments. Sadly, the work was never completed because the project started to require an unsustainable amount of resources. Then, in a painful decision, a shutdown was announced by December 2015.
A couple of months after whitepuma.net was closed, the source code was released by its creator as Open Source on GitHub. But it wasn't maintained.
Now, some of the original members of the dev and admin teams gathered up with a handful of the WhitePuma's elite users, and decided to make something good with the best pieces of the old source code. That, with fresh new ideas and the power of the BardCanvas engine, synthesized the core of Blockchain Financial.

Groestlcoin Core v2.16.3 - Please Update ASAP

A new major Groestlcoin Core version 2.16.3 is now available for download which includes both a Denial of Service component and a critical inflation vulnerability, so it is recommended to upgrade to it if you are running a full Groestlcoin node or a local Groestlcoin Core wallet.
v2.16.3 is now the official release version of Groestlcoin Core. This is a new major version release with a very important security updates. It is recommended to upgrade to this version as soon as possible. Please stop running versions of Groestlcoin Core affected by CVE-2018-17144 ASAP: These are 2.13.3 and 2.16.0.
As a result in this, all exchanges and services have been asked to upgrade to this version, so please be patient if wallets go in to maintenance mode on these services.

What's new in version v2.16.3?

This is a major release of Groestlcoin Core fixing a Denial of Service component and a critical inflation vulnerability (https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2018-17144) exploitable by miners that has been discovered in Groestlcoin Core version 2.13.3 and 2.16.0. It is recommended to upgrade to 2.16.3 as soon as possible. If you only occasionally run Groestlcoin Core, then it's not necessary to run out and upgrade it right this second. However, you should upgrade it before you next run it. If you know anyone who is running an older version, tell them to upgrade it ASAP. Stored funds are not at risk, and never were at risk. At this time we believe over half of the Groestlcoin hashrate has upgraded to patched nodes. We are unaware of any attempts to exploit this vulnerability. However, it still remains critical that affected users upgrade and apply the latest patches to ensure no possibility of large reorganizations, mining of invalid blocks, or acceptance of invalid transactions occurs.

The Technicals

In Groestlcoin Core 2.13.3, an optimization was added (Bitcoin Core PR #9049) which avoided a costly check during initial pre-relay block validation that multiple inputs within a single transaction did not spend the same input twice which was added in 2012 (Bitcoin Core PR #443). While the UTXO-updating logic has sufficient knowledge to check that such a condition is not violated in 2.13.3 it only did so in a sanity check assertion and not with full error handling (it did, however, fully handle this case twice in prior to 2.1.0.6). Thus, in Groestlcoin Core 2.13.3, any attempts to double-spend a transaction output within a single transaction inside of a block will result in an assertion failure and a crash, as was originally reported. In Groestlcoin Core 2.16.0, as a part of a larger redesign to simplify unspent transaction output tracking and correct a resource exhaustion attack the assertion was changed subtly. Instead of asserting that the output being marked spent was previously unspent, it only asserts that it exists. Thus, in Groestlcoin Core 2.16.0, any attempts to double-spend a transaction output within a single transaction inside of a block where the output being spent was created in the same block, the same assertion failure will occur. However, if the output being double-spent was created in a previous block, an entry will still remain in the CCoin map with the DIRTY flag set and having been marked as spent, resulting in no such assertion. This could allow a miner to inflate the supply of Groestlcoin as they would be then able to claim the value being spent twice.
